Expert of the month IAN YOUNG

April 16, 2015

I was first introduced to Ian Young fitness when my friend Jayne brought me along to his circuits class.

I talk more about my friendship with Jayne here.

I distinctly remember her saying “They (the circuits classes) are on another level”. She wasn’t wrong.

Ian caters for all levels, sizes, ages but he knows how to get results by setting up drills that condition the body and make you work.

Soon the classes become an addiction and you find yourself there week in and week out, even on a Saturday morning boxing session with him. At least that’s how it worked for my husband and I.

The feeling after a good sweat fest with Ian involves some kind of strange sense that you can conquer anything! The passion Ian has for his job is infectious. You only have to spend half a minute on his social media sites to see his commitment to the job at hand. My favourite hashtag on my instagram account is #FitForLife, something Ian takes pretty seriously.

Next week he is putting me through my paces for ‘I have thirty minutes at the gym, how do I best use my time?’. I will post this for you to see!

Then the following week he is showing us an at-home type, no equipment workout.

Make sure to subscribe to my blog (to the right of the screen if you’re on a laptop or computer, scroll to the bottom if you’re on a mobile device) so you are notified of these workouts as and when they happen.

But before all of that…

Here is a little Q&A with him.

Name- Ian Young
Age – 38
Occupation – Fitness & Conditioning Coach
Location – N.I

In a few lines tell us a bit about yourself, work, family, lifestyle etc.

Easy going, yet very motivated 38yr old Fitness Fanatic, Specialising in Functional Fitness & Conditioning and Group Fitness, Married to Deb, son Jude age 3.

You are now a personal trainer. Can you tell us a bit about your sporting / fitness background?

I was always very sporty, even at school – Football, Athletics were my main sports, outside of that Karate, Kickboxing, and Motocross were also involved. Football came to the fore, I’ve won 4 Irish League Medals – 2 with Crusaders and 2 with Linfield FC, I’ve played for teams abroad, New Zealand and Singapore. Retired from football at 25, and started back kicking boxing under the guidance of Billy Murray at Prokick – I won 2 Celtic Nations Title, British Title, European Title and won the WKN Super Welterweight World Title at the Belfast Waterfront Hall, my last fight was the K1 European GP in Lisbon, Portugal.

What do you enjoy most about what you do now?

The passion I see from clients, it drives me on – I love to see focused, and determined people – I honestly feel like I don’t work a day, I’m so passionate about what I do.

How do you stay on track with your fitness goals? (diet, training with someone etc)

I find this pretty easy – as I said above I love the passion and drive from clients, it drives me on harder – I’m motivated on a hourly / daily basis.

How important is nutrition to you?

Nutrition is KING, it’s essential – you can’t out train a bad diet.

What is your favourite activity to do outside of sport/fitness?

Spend time with family and friends, you can’t beat it – Jude is at a very funny age, and he cracks me up – I’m blessed.

Where was the last place you holidayed?

Cannes.

Do you have any advice for your younger self?

To Trust myself more.

If you had to chose one cheat meal what would it be?

Steak & Onion Pie from Masseys Butchers in Saintfield – BEAUTIFUL !

Great article…but there is so much more to Ian Young and his classes. The help and support he offers to everyone is fantastic. Totally driven by passion and its refreshing. Once you get a taste of the support thats comes from Ian and everyone who attends the Circuits, boxing classes or his sprinting sessions you will see why peoples fitness levels, attitudes and drive go to another level…you will not look back.
